LTDC Launches “Re Bontše Lesotho” – A Sponsored Tourism Initiative

The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation has officially launched a nationwide tourism initiative titled Re Bontše Lesotho, aimed at strengthening the global visibility of Lesotho through structured digital storytelling.

The programme introduces a district-based model in which one content creator is selected per district and supported by a sponsoring organization. The selected creators are expected to produce high-quality visual and digital content that highlights the country’s landscapes, cultural heritage, and tourism experiences, with the broader goal of attracting international visitors.

Six Districts Secured Sponsorship

At the time of launch, six districts have confirmed sponsorship partnerships with private-sector stakeholders:

Maseru – Mmelesi Lodge

Mmelesi Lodge, is a hospitality establishment based in Maseru. Its participation is directly linked to the tourism sector, reinforcing the importance of industry stakeholders in destination marketing.

“We have been located in Maseru for 34 years, at the origin of Lesotho in Thaba-Bosiu. We would like to show where we come from as Basotho. We are also the only hospitality service provider to participate in this initiative”

Leribe – Alliance Insurance

Alliance Insurance operates within Lesotho’s insurance industry, offering a range of coverage solutions. The company’s sponsorship highlights increasing recognition of tourism as a viable sector for long-term economic contribution.

Butha-Buthe – Standard Lesotho Bank

Standard Lesotho Bank is one of the country’s leading financial institutions, providing banking services across retail and corporate sectors. Its involvement in the initiative reflects growing private-sector participation in tourism-led economic development.

During the press release when sponsorship agreement was signed,

“Butha-Buthe is rich in heritage and the roots of Lesotho. The journey of Morena Moshoeshoe can be traced in Menkhoaneng, where it began. It has Sekubu (Liphofung Cave), which is renowned as a significant historical and cultural site. It also has Kopunyane Cave, considered the origin of democracy in Lesotho, where the first Parliament originated. Butha-Buthe has more to offer in tourism attractions, and we want the content creator to also discover more.”

Mokhotlong – Econet Telecom Lesotho

Econet Telecom Lesotho is one of the major telecommunications provider, playing a key role in digital connectivity. Its participation aligns with the initiative’s emphasis on digital content production and online distribution.

“ETL is the first telecommunications company to launch communication towers in the district. Mokhotlong has beautiful landscapes and scenery. It has Sani Pass and the second phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. It has highest peak in Lesotho, Thabana Ntlenyane and we want not only Mokhotlong but Lesotho to be well represented by the face of content creators”

Qacha’s Nek – Metropolitan Lesotho

Metropolitan Lesotho provides financial and insurance services, with a focus on long-term financial planning. The company’s involvement reflects an interest in supporting sustainable national initiatives.

“Qacha’s Nek has beautiful parks including Sehlabathebe and Snake Park. We are willing to make more interesting places in Qacha to be well known and discovered. We also want to be known in Qacha’s Nek and implement our services.”

Quthing – LNIG Hollard

LNIG Hollard is part of a broader insurance network, offering various risk and financial solutions. It has taken a leading role as the first sponsor in the initiative. Its sponsorship contributes to expanding private-sector engagement in tourism promotion.

“Quthing is a hidden gem. People don’t know much about Quthing. There are three languages and more, showing diversity of culture; Basotho, Baphuthi, and Xhosa. It has Mount Moorosi and its history, the Senqu River, and footprints of dinosaurs. There’s more to explore because it feels people from Quthing are being neglected and not given enough attention.”

Remaining Districts Without Sponsors

By the time of launching the initial progress, four districts have yet to secure sponsorship under the initiative. These include:

  • Berea
  • Thaba-Tseka
  • Mohale’s Hoek
  • Mafeteng

The absence of sponsors in these districts presents a gap in the initiative’s national coverage. Industry observers note that full participation across all districts is critical to achieving a comprehensive representation of Lesotho’s tourism offering.

Focus on International Tourism Growth

The Re Bontše Lesotho initiative is positioned within a broader strategy to elevate the country’s tourism profile. By leveraging locally produced, high-quality content, LTDC aims to align with global tourism trends that prioritize visual storytelling, authenticity, and digital engagement.

Content creators selected under the programme are expected to document and promote district-specific attractions, contributing to a unified national narrative capable of reaching international audiences.

The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation has introduced a forward-thinking initiative Re Bontše Lesotho, designed to reposition Lesotho as a compelling global tourism destination. This initiative directly aligns with modern destination marketing trends, where visual storytelling, digital reach, and authenticity drive tourism decisions globally.
